I have contents in my building that I want to save from the water and smoke damage. Do I have to wait for my insurance company to give me approval to mitigate the damages?
No. Most Insurance Policies state – ‘You must see that the following are done in the event of loss of or damage to Covered Property: Take all reasonable steps to protect the Covered Property from further damage by a Covered Cause of Loss.’ If there is water and smoke damage to your furniture and contents, you should act now to prevent further damage. The longer you wait, the water and smoke will only cause more damage and may be more difficult to clean. It’s up to you, act now.
Should I try and clean smoke and soot damage from my belongings after a fire?
No. In many cases, trying to clean or repair damage caused by soot and smoke often inflicts more damage. It is best to hire a certified restoration professional that can assess the damage and determine the best course of action to take in cleaning or repairing your damaged items.
Will cleaning moldy areas stop its growth?
Cleaning is an important step when attempting to eliminate microbial growth, however cleaning alone will not eliminate continued growth. To stop mold growth, the moisture source that promotes the growth must be corrected. Then a detailed cleaning and elimination of microscopic organisms must be performed. Microbial growth should always be assessed and eliminated by an IICRC Restoration Professional.
